A Phone Call from Nicia's Father
April 9, 2000

Nicia Giovanniello: ~asleep at home~

Enzo Giovaniello: *Phone rings*

Nicia Giovanniello: ~wakes an quickles answer her cell phone~ Pronto?

Nicia Giovanniello: (quickly)

Nicia Giovanniello: ~looks over to see if the phone woke Michael~

Enzo Giovaniello: Nicia, my daughter...you sound sleepy.

Nicia Giovanniello: (will be speaking in italian) Morning, Papa... I was asleep. ~slips on her robe~

Enzo Giovaniello: ((*Nods*)) Ah, I see. When is Mass at the church there, your mama and I were just getting ready to go.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~fixes the covers on the bed and goes down to the kitchen so as not to wake Michael~

Nicia Giovanniello: Mass is Ten o'clock. ~flinches, she has been to church for weeks~

Nicia Giovanniello: Is everything all right at home?

Nicia Giovanniello: ~goes about making her self a cup of espresso~

Enzo Giovaniello: Of course it is, I was calling to find out what is new with my only girl. Is it wrong for an old man to dote?

Nicia Giovanniello: Oh course, not papa. Everything is going well for me. ~avoiding the "what is new" question~

Nicia Giovanniello: (Of)

Nicia Giovanniello: ~takes her cup of espresso out to the living room, sitting on the couch getting comfortable~

Enzo Giovaniello: Excellent, and your business? I trust you are putting your accounting skills to use my daughter.

Nicia Giovanniello: More my organizations skills.

Nicia Giovanniello: I was thinking about starting my own business, she you do not wish for me to get into the family business

Enzo Giovaniello: Hmmph. You know...Lorenzo was asking about you the other day, he wondering when you are coming back and marrying him.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~sighs~ Papa, I don't want to marry Lorenzo. I told you that much just before Christmas. I wish you didn't arrange this marriage.

Nicia Giovanniello: I don't want to be window dressing for anyone.

Enzo Giovaniello: *sighs patiently* Nicia, you will be window dressing if that is how you think of yourself. Look at your mama. She's no window dressing.

Nicia Giovanniello: I know mama's not window dressing, but mama as so loves you. I don't love Lorenzo. I never will. Papa please, you have to make some other kind of deal for the family to be loyal to each other.

Enzo Giovaniello: Nicia, do you not know the value of this? For this to have even been arranged is a sign of utmost trust and respect. For it to be broken off now shows lack of trust, and that I cannot allow.

Nicia Giovanniello: Trust? What about me papa? You didn't even tell me about this until the deal was made. Do youwant me to love theman I marry? To have what you and mama have? I can not have it with Lorenzo.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~he going to kill me when he finds he has a grandson~

Enzo Giovaniello: My daughter, what have I tried to tell you all these years? The family must come first. For without the family, nothing good can happen. The first time I laid eyes on your mother was when I lifted her veil to kiss her as my wife. You and Lorenzo will learn to love each other, if you allow it. Think of the family, nothing is greater.

Nicia Giovanniello: Papa I love you dearly, but I can not marry Lorenzo. I know family is important, but I just can not do this. I want to marry for love.

Nicia Giovanniello: Times are different now papa, some things need to change. ~waits for the growl she knows she'll hear~

Enzo Giovaniello: We all want to marry for love. But when we cannot we must learn to love whom we are married to. Look at your mama and me, eh? Do you think we loved each other from the beginning? No. We had to become friends, this is the chance you must give Lorenzo. He is a good boy, you'll see this.

Nicia Giovanniello: A good boy.. Lorenzo is not a good boy. He's a womanizer.. he is an ass.

Enzo Giovaniello: *The expected growl comes through the reciever clearly* Change, always with this generation it is change. Where do these desires for change come from, eh? Who put this nonsense in your head that the fasmily is less important. The famioly is everything, Nicia. Surely you have know this. What does the family give, eh? We give each other everything. It is our meaning, it is our strength.

Enzo Giovaniello: Bah. Lorenzo is no more womanizer than any man who does not have a strong wife to keep him in line.

Nicia Giovanniello: Why don't you marry of one of my brothers and see what they have to say about it. It is so much easier to to a man in this world. I would give my life for my family... MY family. I would not give my life for Lorenzo, not now, not ever.

Nicia Giovanniello: I do not want to be that woman.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~damn she can't argue that point cause she know he right, mama does keep him in line even if he doesn't admit it~

Enzo Giovaniello: None of Lorenzos' sisters are eligible, Nicia. Do you think if there was another way around this I would not have taken it? Princesia, this is the only way.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~she is already promise/mated to someone but she can't tell him this over the phone... it has to be in person~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~sighs~ We have to talk about this in person, not over the phone.

Enzo Giovaniello: If you insist, Nicia. There will be a plane ticket for you atb the counter.

Nicia Giovanniello: Papa, I didn't mean this minute. ~sigh~ There will have to be another deal made with the Bicelli family. this marriage will not happen. ~it's killing her to hurt her father like this, but she just can not marry Lorenzo~

Enzo Giovaniello: Nina, you're putting an old man in his grave with your words....Months I searched for another way. I expected you to understand better, that another solution does not exist. For us to have trust and friendship with the Bicellis as we should, this marriage must happen. It is not good that two families should be angry with each other because of a woman's childish wish.

Nicia Giovanniello: Childish wishes? Papa you raised me to be a strong, independent woman. To think for myself. Do you want me to forget about all that? I can not.

Nicia Giovanniello: I am just like you papa.

Enzo Giovaniello: You only remember half the lessons. We raised you like that, and we also raised you to know that the family is the most important thing, that independence must be forsaken for the family to prosper.

Enzo Giovaniello: *Sighs and grumbles softly* In some ways, you are. That was why I was hoping you would see this for what it is.

Nicia Giovanniello: I have not forgotten that, I just don't agree with how this has come about.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~her voice softens~ Can you not see it from my point of view?

Nicia Giovanniello: I believe in traditions, but some traditions have out grown tthe times.

Enzo Giovaniello: Nicia, if I thought you were going to have a problem with this for very long, you would have been asked. That is how much I trust you. That is how much I believe in you, to make this a good thing. To see that you must make love where the chance is given to you.

Nicia Giovanniello: I have taken the chance at love, papa.

Enzo Giovaniello: How can you be so callous about tradition? Tradition is what families are built on, it is what keeps them strong. It is the foundation upon which everything is built, it is the thing we all have in common. every family is built on tradition. Without tradition, we are fiddlers on the roof, you know this.

Enzo Giovaniello: *Well, that sure as hell brings him up short* And you did not tell us this? Why? Does my daughter suddenly hiold her family in such contempt?

Nicia Giovanniello: ~winces... as if he had actually slapped her~

Silver Kane: [lurks on to make trouble for nicia]

Nicia Giovanniello: (nicia is down stairs, she left Kane alone so he could sleep)

Nicia Giovanniello: I do not hold my family is contempt.

Enzo Giovaniello: ((*Snickers*)) Yes. You should have told us this in person. This, my nina, makes things very difficult for me. I cannot marry off my daughter without holding a chance that she will be able to make a garden of love. Yet I must, if there is to be trust. *he falls silent*

Silver Kane: ~moves as quiet as any garou can be, awakened by that far away voice , the once sided converstation. We all know it, it drives us insane and we cannot sleep. As Nicia is not there he assumes the near man, and will seem to even appear from no where~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~tears now flowing~ Papa...

Enzo Giovaniello: Then why, why, why? Why do you not tell us of your love, why do you not tell us of your life? When I do not know things, I cannot be a good leader.

Silver Kane: ~his voice is gruff, gruffer than it should be. carries too, a low growl at her tears~ Who..

Nicia Giovanniello: If I could ensure the trust between the Giovanniello's and the Bicelli's I would, just not with this marriage.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~looks over at Kane~

Silver Kane: ~in two sentences he knows enough, and turns to go, not his place this one~

Nicia Giovanniello: I'm am not perfect, I have made mistakes. ~maybe over the phone is how this should happen~

Enzo Giovaniello: *His voice softens* Daughter, place yourself in my shoes. If there is no marriage, there is no trust. If there is no trust, then there is a bad situation where there should not be one, and resources are expended without bearing fruit. What should I do, Nicia?

Silver Kane: ~he stops breifly, walks over to her and on her off side, places a light kiss on her cheeks, but says nothing~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~sees Kane turning to go, want him to stay, but...~

Silver Kane: ~after the kiss, he walks back to bed~[brunch, i HATE snow driving. *poofles*]

Nicia Giovanniello: ~looks up at Kane...obviously this conversation is not going well~

Enzo Giovaniello: *sigh* Nicia, where were you so that I could tell you? These things must happen face to face, I cannot tell you over the phone. I respect you too much for that. Yet negotiations must continue, or I look poorly.

Nicia Giovanniello: (Have a nice brunch..Bye, bye..drive carefully)

Nicia Giovanniello: I could have flown home from Italy.

Nicia Giovanniello: Have you lookined into the possiblity that Lorenzo could have someone else in mind for his wife?

Nicia Giovanniello: Some one out side the family.

Enzo Giovaniello: Lorenzo, understands tradition. If his father says he will marry a woman, he will marry a woman.

Nicia Giovanniello: I just can not do this one thing papa. anything but this.

Enzo Giovaniello: Nina....you will come up to New York, soon. We must speak of this face to face. There is so much at stake with this....

Nicia Giovanniello: All right papa, I'll fly up in a day or two.

Enzo Giovaniello: Good. It has been too long since I kissed my daughters cheeks.

Nicia Giovanniello: I've mised you too, papa. We have much to talk about.

Nicia Giovanniello: ~looks up at the clock~ Yes, papa we do. I will call you when I have my flight plan.

Enzo Giovaniello: I might not be in, you may have to leave a message. I have dinner with the Bicellis tonight. I love you Nina.

Nicia Giovanniello: All right. I'll leave a message. I love you too Papa. Give my love to mamma.

Enzo Giovaniello: I will princesia. *Breaks the connection*

Nicia Giovanniello: ~hangs up her phone, sinks into the couch, feeling like she's drowning~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~looks a the clock again... gets up to get ready for Mass~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~dressed suitable for Mass she heads out, leaving Kane note of where she has gone~

Nicia Giovanniello: ~wavies~ bye, bye...
